HamCram Class

HamCram Report.  Saturday, May 3, saw the first time ever for a NFARL Ham Cram - the program where you study for your Tech License FOR ONE DAY and take your test at the end of the day.  19 eager students passed the test given by W8BLA, WB4MAK, and KI7A.  It was a FULL day for instructors W4QO and WB4MAK, with able assistance from KJ4CUS, but no one seemed to nod off as a break was scheduled each hour.  New calls should be showing up less than one week later so welcome any you hear on the repeater.  Another Ham Cram is being considered for the fall.  Click the picture to the right to see Mack's photos.  Added 5/7/2008

VE Testing session needs volunteers.  The test team needs one or two more certified examiners or several non-certified helpers for the May 10 test session.  Testing starts at 10:00AM.  Contact Vern - W8BLA if you  can help.  Added May 5, 2008

Reserve June 7 for Atlanta Hamfest 2008.  Always a good show.  Lee Jucket reports that he's arranging for a table for us, so plan to take a break from touring the show & help staff the table. The Hamfest flyer is hereAdded Cinco de Mayo 2008

... and June 28 - 29 for Field Day.  Field Day Captain Steve Knittel - KC4YBO is deep into preparations for this year's extravaganza & is confident that we're going to have our best effort yet.  Start looking at your calendar & be prepared to let Steve know what time slot works best for you at the May club meeting.  Also, ask el Presidente Jim about his wager with GARS.  Added May 5, 2008

Davis Academy Radio Day

Davis Academy RadioDay.  Club members KR4MM, W3WL, KJ4AJY, and W4QO led a RadioDay at the Davis Academy in Dunwoody on April 4.  About 80 students during 3 class periods heard all about CODES - not just Morse code but various secret codes used to convey messages throughout history.  W3WL discussed the ENIGMA machine and KR4MM explained ASCII/computer codes.  Students really jumped into Morse code and had a whole bunch of fun decoding words for W4QO.  Teacher and club member Dave Moore, KU4MT, arranged the program for his school.  WK4U and daughter showed up for moral support.  Thanks to all who helped.  Pictures are in the 2008 Photo AlbumPosted 4/6/2008

Wanna learn more about CW?   Jim has put together a gangbusters page full of CW resources.  Check it out here.  You can also view it by moving your cursor over the "Education" menu button and clicking on the new "CW" sub-button.  Posted 4/2/2008

Not sure how our repeaters work?  Fred, Mack, & Jim have worked hard to expand the information on our Repeaters page.  They have done an incredible job -- even I can understand (most of) it!!  Check it out.  Posted 3/20/2008

NFARL hosts first VE session in years!  The club held its first amateur radio exam test session on Feb. 23.  Seventeen applicants took the test and 17 passed at least one exam element and went away with an initial license or an upgrade.  The stats were like this:  9 new Techs, 7 new Generals, and 1 new Extra. VE test manager Vern Fowler, W8BLA, declared the session a resounding success.  Congrats to the new hams who are anxiously awaiting their tickets! Posted 2/23/08

NFARL members at dinner in Orlando

Orlando Hamcation.  NFARL members Jim Stafford - W4QO, Bill Reed - K4YJI, Bill Cobb - K4YJJ, and Fred Moore- N4CLA caravanned to Orlando February 7 for a weekend of fun at the Orlando hamfest.

Not one to miss a good party, Mack McCormick - WB4MAK flew in Friday for a business meeting & then spent the afternoon with the rest of us at the show.

We gathered for dinner at a local Mexican restaurant Friday night.  Marilyn Stafford, Kline Reed, and Janet Cobb joined the dinner crew after an afternoon of touring and shopping; Buddy Moore drove over from Melbourne to see Dad Fred.

Slopes can't hold a candle to the Mariachi group that serenaded the ladies -- egged on by Mack -- and the food and beverages were excellent.  added 2/13/2008
