Field Day Bulletin #6

June 19, 2010

Participate in Field Day

All,

First of all, I want to offer my congratulations to all the new Ham Cram graduates whose call signs came in Thursday, and to the new Generals who tested at Ham Cram last weekend.  For the new technicians, welcome to the greatest hobby there is.  I don't think I've seen any other hobby that mixes social, educational, and community service aspects quite like this one, and it is one that will easily be around for your lifetime.

Now that the congratulations are done, I strongly encourage you to come participate in Field Day.  This is one of the best opportunities for you to get a taste of what both HF operations and emergency response are like.  Plan to come operate our GOTA (Get On The Air) station, where Wes Lamboley, W3WL, will guide you through operating on the HF bands.  Once you finish that, we have a V/UHF station active where you can work 6 meters.  All license holders of any class have full privileges on the 6m band.  It is the closest thing to DX most of us can get on V/UHF, and working it can be as much fun as a good HF pileup.  There are still plenty of open time slots to operate this station.  Contact Dave Moore, KU4MT, to sign up.  His email is coachdavidmoore at yahoo dot com.  But most importantly, come out and have fun exploring the many facets of your new hobby!

For everyone, things are coming together quite nicely.  If you haven't already RSVPed for the picnic Saturday night, please do so no later than Monday, June 21.  Food chair Lynn Kahn, KJ4DYH, needs to have RSVPs in by then so she can compile all the numbers, order enough barbecue from Spiced Right, and make sure we have all the hamburgers, hot dogs, buns, drinks, etc., that we'll need to feed a large army!  :-)  When you RSVP, please also let her know what side or dessert you'll bring to share with the crowd.  Contact her at kj4dyh at nfarl dot org.

As a reminder, please mark your calendars for the Roswell City Council meeting on Monday, June 21.  At that meeting, Mayor Jere Wood will present a proclamation to NFARL honoring Field Day and our activities and declaring the week of June 21 Amateur Radio Week in Roswell.  Please come out in your NFARL gear and support the club during this important honor.  The City of Roswell is very kind to us, and we want to show up in numbers and support this activity.  The city council meeting is at 7:00 PM at Roswell City Hall, 38 Hill Street, Roswell, GA, 30075.

On a final note, last year we had the best attended Field Day in the country, with 259 people.  This year, we want to do even better!  The club grew by about 15% this year, with a total of 275 members.  We should easily beat the 259 number.  It would be tremendous if we could hit between 285 and 300 people.  So come out, have fun, and support NFARL as we continue to host one of the best Field Day activities in the country.  As always, if you have any questions/comments/suggestions, please direct them to me at ak4ik at nfarl dot org, or to fieldday at nfarl dot org.

Ian, AK4IK
