Field Day Bulletin #10

New Field Day Development!!!

June 25, 2008

Announcing the First ... Ever ...
NFARL Field Day Photo Contest

Everyone is encouraged to bring their cameras to Field Day and take lots of pictures.

And, to sweeten the pot, your Field Day and Executive Committees are sponsoring a photo contest.

Take all the pictures you can throughout Field Day (we want photos starting with the first steps of setup and ending with the last elements of tear down).   Pick your best two, and submit them to the club.   The best photo will win a prize (to be announced next week).

You can also submit your photos to Bill Cobb, K4YJJ, our esteemed web master, for publication on the club web site.

We'll announce the photo contest prize(s) and where to submit the contest entries next week.   Photos for publication on the web site should be sent to webmaster@nfarl.org.

Field Day Safety Tips

We all want to have a fun, safe Field Day. In that spirit, below are some safety tips for everyone to keep in mind:

  1. We'll be working with antenna parts flying high in the air so WEAR SAFETY GLASSES during set up and take down.  We'll try to bring a couple extra pairs.
  2. If you have a HARD HAT, WEAR IT!  Don't worry about how you'll look.  You could be glad you did!!
  3. We'll be working with lots of generators. First rule, shut down the generator to add gasoline.   If you feel confident to add gas with it running, use two people to insure no spills and/or to hold the flashlight and tell you when to stop.  Use a funnel if possible.  If you spill gas, shut down the generator quickly.  Pull the power cord first if you think about it.
  4. Watch for tripping - there will be lots of wires running all over the place so watch your step.
  5. If in doubt about how to tune a rig, ask for help.  If you sense that a generator is running out of gas (due to galloping), shut down the main transceiver immediately.  However, in the shelter there will be separate AC for lights and computers so they should be left running.
  6. Drink lots of water during setup and tear down.  Use sun tan oil during these times.
  7. Be calm - things will go wrong at FD - SMILE!  This is for my benefit.  As long as no one gets hurt, it can't be that important!  However, during rain, try to cover the equipment if it will get wet.
  8. Be courteous - remember there will be lots of visitors and hams who did not sign up.  Offer to have them operate when there is a convenient spot.
  9. Remember no beer or alcoholic beverages at Waller Park.  (However, note: KrispiKreme is nearby!)
  10. If it starts to smoke, turn off or unplug everything you can and shut down generators that might be impacting.  There will be a fire extinguisher at the main shelter if you need it.

Thanks to Jim, W4QO, for these helpful tips.

OK, that's everything for now. Field Day is only a little over two days away. So keep watching for any last minute news.

Thanks and 73,

Ian, AK4IK
